Job description

How do we sum up Barnsley Council?

Well, we’re a double award-winning, high-performing council with a growing economy, a thriving town centre and some truly impressive outcomes in our communities. This is why we’ve been awarded Council of the Year for 2023 by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) and The Municipal Journal (MJ) and retained our Ofsted ‘Good’ rating.

Our Children's Services has been a key part of our win; we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved not just for the council but for our partners and Barnsley.

We’re impressed. Are you? It’s the perfect time to join our excellent team.

Barnsley 2030

Why Barnsley is booming podcast

We are an ambitious Local Authority who are committed to continued improvement activity in driving strength based, relational and collaborative practice in our work with children, young people, and their family networks.  We want to make sure that we make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people. We’re a council that prioritises Children’s Services, and we want every child in the borough to achieve their full potential, to be safe and happy.

Creativity, ambition and a focus on people. That’s what matters at Barnsley Council. Our award-winning council is on an exciting journey of change. It’s all about putting local people at the heart of everything, listening to and doing good for our communities. We’re now more innovative, more efficient and provide better value for money. The changes are clear to see - from new businesses and jobs, to improving school results and to museums being recognised for their community engagement.

About the Post:

We're looking to recruit a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and committed professional part-time social worker to join one of our four Assessment Teams. Co-located with the police at Wombwell Police Station, the Assessment Teams complete assessments with children and families within 40 working days and collaboratively with the family determine the right intervention. Once the plan has been agreed, the family will either close to Children’s Social Care or transfer to the relevant service area, Early Help services or long-term social work teams. The four teams are on a rota for being on duty allocations for one week and then spend three weeks “off duty” and complete and assessments and develop plans for intervention where needed. This is a short-term service with a focus on timely quality assessments which consider need and risk.

We are looking for someone with passion and drive to improve the outcomes and lived experience of children within Barnsley. You will be able to work at pace to ensure decision making is timely. You will know what good looks like and will be confident in working within a performance management framework which supports good outcomes for children.

In return, you will be welcomed into a friendly and nurturing environment, with visible managers, who will support your professional development and help you succeed.

Due to the post being based in a Police Station, the preferred candidate will require level 2 vetting. The south Yorkshire Force Vetting Unit Privacy Notice is available at: https://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/search/?q=vetting, and we are happy to discuss the process involved if you would like any further information about this.
