Job description

Service Manager Aldine House Childrens Secure Centre

Grade 11 plus secure unit allowance

Sheffield is a great city and our Corporate plan focuses on what makes Sheffield a unique, ambitious and inspiring city with a clear vision for Sheffield children and young people to be safe and supported to achieve their full potential. We are pursuing ambitious plans for transformation, facing the challenges of making efficiencies and modernising how we work, so that we deliver high performing, quality services to children and young people.

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Service Manager, who shares our values and who wants to make a difference. We are looking for applicants who understand the challenges of working in a care setting and will strive to achieve the very best outcomes, alongside our multi agency partnerships. You will need to have experience of working with vulnerable adolescents, who have complex needs and present high risk. Along with experience as a leader, line manager with responsibility for staff supervision. You will be highly motivated, with a strong social care background with the ability to effectively lead and inspire staff through the provision of strong, forward thinking and values bases leadership and management. You will have a high degree of inter-personal skills to work effectively across the centre, wider organisations and external partner agencies.

You need to have a Level 5 Registered Managers qualification ( City & Guilds Level 5 (NVQ) and a Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children's and Young People's Services (England) or equivalent and have extensive experience of direct work with children and young people. You will have a thorough knowledge of relevant legislation including up-to-date knowledge of inspection regulations, policies and procedures. You will be creative and motivated to support service expansion and improvement.

Our social pedagogic approach empowers staff to keep young people at the centre of their practice, grow their self-belief, and prepare them to reintegrate with the community. Aldine House Secure Centre is an option for young people aged 12-18 who can be accommodated on welfare, remand or custodial grounds.  We have just been awarded £1.1m by the DfE to improve the accommodation inclusive of a hair and beauty salon to train residents –demonstrating that we have an outstanding service looking to continuously improve and develop.

Though we maintain high levels of security and safety, we make sure the home feels like a home, not an institution. Young people take up opportunities to consider their actions and reflect on the consequences so they are ready to move forward when they leave the home.  Because we provide a range of services, we can use our specialist knowledge from across the sector to help each young person. This includes high quality care, education and therapeutic work, all of which positively impact young people’s lives. By showing young people the influence they can have over their own lives, they leave our home with improved self-esteem and positive decision making skills.

You will be welcomed into a supportive, experienced, and forward-thinking leadership team who can, and do, draw on a wide range of professional and specialist support to ensure excellent outcomes for young people.  Your personal and professional development is important to us and so you will have the opportunity to work and grow in a value-based organisation where people are at the heart of everything we do.  We promote a positive permission culture, empowering you to make a difference. We are committed to supporting our leaders to grow and provide leadership and management courses via our prestigious local universities as well as ongoing in house training and development.

Our latest Ofsted inspection confirmed that the unit was “outstanding”:

The atmosphere in the home is relaxed, homely and, at times, vibrant. Staff and managers at all levels have a visual presence, relationships with the children are informal and there is a culture in the home of mutual respect. Staff said that they feel valued and expressed high levels of job satisfaction. Equally, children said that they felt listened to and had a say in what they wanted to do. Children participate in staff interviews and their views are given credence.

Children form meaningful and supportive relationships with staff. There is an atmosphere of genuine warmth between children and staff, with both clearly enjoying each other’s company. This embedded culture of mutual respect means that children’s achievements and successes are celebrated. Children make exceptional progress because of this shared ethos.
