Job description

Practice Lead Social Worker – Up to 9 months Maternity cover – Part Time post

Hull’s Social Work Academy launched in May 2022 with recruitment to key posts such as the Academy Manager, Practice Leads and Practice Educators only completing in August 2022. Since then, the team’s focus, passion and impact has gone from strength to strength and achieved so much in a short time. We now have an established Social Work Academy which our workforce and managers really value. The ‘grow our own’ strategy has resulted in more social work students and apprentices based in our teams than ever before, all contributing hugely to achieving stable social work teams across our services. Our Academy approach to learning and professional development is also much stronger with ‘bitesize’ learning, Stop the Clock and Signs of Safety ‘practice intensives’ now leading the way, bringing routine learning to teams so that individuals who work together can learn and develop together, sharing their knowledge skills and experience.

Through the Academy our vision is to create and sustain the conditions for outstanding social work and social work leadership to flourish in Hull by providing high-quality support, learning and development for social workers at all stages of their career and for our managers and leaders. We continue to make Hull a destination of choice for anyone seeking a fulfilling career in social work and wanting to provide excellent services and direct interventions which make a positive difference to our children by reducing risks and increasing safety and belonging.

The Academy strengthens our recruitment efforts by attracting and supporting new entrants to the profession including student social workers, those following apprentice or step-up routes and those joining as Newly Qualified Social Workers. The Academy helps to create a solid infrastructure to support and expand this growing cohort of social workers coming to Hull. We have a strong commitment to ‘growing our own’ and are determined to put in place the right support and learning environment which will help to develop strong, passionate and resilient social workers committed to making a difference for children in Hull. The Social Work Academy aims to develop good practice, inspire new ways of working and shape the training, recruitment and retention of social work staff.

At Hull City Council we are committed to our children and young people, and we are passionate about how we deliver services to them. That’s why we are developing and nurturing a culture that puts our children and young people at the heart of everything we do by empowering our workforce to work together to find solutions, to be open, honest, and respectful, to take responsibility and listen and learn from others. If you value these behaviours too, we’d love to hear from you.

The Academy development provides exciting opportunities for committed, motivated and outstanding individuals who want to join our team and help us deliver excellent, high-quality innovative services. We are now seeking a part time Practice Lead Social Worker on a fixed term basis to cover maternity leave for a period of up to 9 months, external and internal applicants will be considered, for internal applicants this would be a secondment opportunity which will allow you to continue in your current post whilst gaining experience working as part of the academy. The posts will report directly to the Academy Manager and work in partnership with the Practice Lead Social Workers and Practice Educators.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity in more detail please do not hesitate to contact Claire Rutherford on 01482 616152 or via email to socialworkacademy@hullcc.gov.uk
