Are you highly motivated with a desire to improve outcomes for children and young people with a vision impairment (VI)? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a peripatetic Specialist Practitioner for children with a vision impairment with North Yorkshire Council’s Vision Team (Inclusive Education Service, Sensory Service HI/VI).
Post: Permanent 0.8 (4 days per week)
Specialist Practitioners work directly with children and young people (age 0–25 years) with a wide range of vision impairments across the county. They offer support in homes, early years settings, mainstream and special schools to promote the inclusion, participation and achievement of children and young people with a vision impairment. Working with Teachers of VI, a Habilitation Specialist and Resource Technician, your role will involve delivering and assessing short and longer-term targeted programmes to support children and young people to gain the skills they need to access the curriculum and wider world and develop their independence.
We are seeking someone with:
• Excellent organisational skills who has the ability to manage a peripatetic caseload, plan their time effectively and work without supervision.
• Relevant recent experience working in an educational setting with children with VI, and/or other Special Educational Needs (SEND)
• An understanding of the impact a vision impairment has on learning and development.
• An understanding of and ability to teach a wide range of skills, including early years play, communication skills, braille, IT, and other assistive technologies as well as indoor and outdoor mobility and independence skills.
• An understanding of classroom approaches to support children and young people with VI.
• Excellent communication skills for collaborative working with families, schools and other professionals.
• Excellent IT skills (routine tasks and the ability to implement programmes).
• Self-motivation and a solution-focused attitude.
• Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and other relevant legislation. Experience of inclusive practice and SEND processes within education.

There will be the opportunity to undertake further training to enable the right candidate to be able to fulfil all aspects of this role.
A current driver’s license, access to a car and willingness to travel to children and young people across North Yorkshire.
