The job itself
A great and exciting opportunity has arisen within the Quality Assurance, Learning and Development portfolio for an Advanced Social Worker, whose role it will be to mentor our newly qualified social workers as part of their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE). This newly created role forms part of our continued improvement activity in driving strength based and relational based practice in our work with children, young people and their networks. The role will primarily work directly in a modelling and supportive approach with newly qualified social workers in Children and Young People Safeguarding & Support Services (CYPSSS). You will be supported by our Effective Practice, Learning and Improvement Manager who co-ordinates and leads the ASYE programme through the Effective Practice Academy. The priorities of the Social Worker ASYE mentor role are:
- To provide support and mentoring to Newly Qualified Social Workers
- To provide pastoral support to Newly Qualified Social Workers, in conjunction with your line manager
- To complete professional observations of Newly Qualified Social Workers practice as part of their overall assessment
- To offer feedback and support to Newly Qualified Social Workers regarding the quality of their ASYE portfolio contents
- To support delivery of some learning sessions and group supervisions with Newly Qualified Social Workers
- Gain feedback from Newly Qualified Social Workers, Practice Assessors and stakeholders regarding the quality of the ASYE programme in order to support continued improvement.
The Office Base for this role will be County Hall, Beverley although the post holder will work across the East Riding of Yorkshire footprint alongside newly qualified social workers. It is therefore essential that you are able to travel across the East Riding. Working hours are Monday to Friday.
The right candidate
We are looking for an energetic, creative and experienced social worker who can demonstrate tenacity and enthusiasm in making a positive difference to the lives of children and young people through the support offered to Newly Qualified Social Workers. You will have proven ability of supporting less experienced social workers and will be able to evidence that you meet the criteria of Advanced Social Worker.
You will have an in depth understanding and experience of working with children, young people and their networks and the experiences of working within a children’s social care setting, as well as a thorough knowledge of legislative frameworks and demonstrable commitment to the values of family involvement, relational approaches and empowerment.

Therefore, it is essential that the post holder is able to work effectively with others with a flexible and adaptable approach in a relational based approach – always demonstrating their commitment to working to the highest possible standards whilst remaining at all times child centred.
You will have excellent written and oral communication skills which will enable you to support Newly Qualified Social Workers to prepare clear and coherent reports on work undertaken as well as writing clear, analytical and reflective observations of practice.
You will be able to demonstrate a high level of motivation and the ability to work independently, with skills in working within timescales and with conflicting priorities.
