That’s why in Wakefield we’ve got the pieces in place to support and reward social workers. After all, they’re at the heart of everything we do.
Why choose Wakefield?
Social work is always going to be challenging. But that’s why at Wakefield we’ve set you up to be in the best position to flourish, and work with families to realise their potential.
There’s never been a better time to join our team.
We take pride in our social workers and that’s reflected in our competitive pay. And, unlike some local authorities, we offer a market supplement for every case holding social worker.
Being a social worker can be challenging enough at times, without overwhelming case numbers. With us we strive to keep your caseload to no more than 20 (and up to 15 if you’re newly qualified) and have measures in place to make sure it stays that way.
It’s about fostering a together culture at Wakefield. Keeping and ensuring your happiness is a genuine priority to us. Small teams of no more than eight here enable staff to do their best work and feel genuinely supported in their roles.
A learning culture
Our in-house Learning Academy are dedicated to providing creative learning solutions for you to meet the KSS and PCF – whether you’re part of our successful 12-month ASYE programme or seeking further development from our comprehensive offer – our faculties approach means there’s something for everyone.
With close connections to Research in Practice, and the Leeds and Wakefield Social Work Partnership, we’re proud of the learning and development opportunities on offer.
Unique social work operating model
Co-designed with staff and partners our innovative practice model is in place to support your practice. It incorporates a comprehensive set of tools and theories, with an overarching restorative approach, to enable staff to deliver the best practice and achieve the best outcomes for families.
Clear progression pathways
We care about nurturing talent and experience. It’s why we built clear pathways to advance according to your strengths and experience.
Good rewards and benefits
A generous 28 days holiday (plus 8 bank holidays) when you’re newly-qualified, rising quickly to 30 as an experienced social worker, plus essential car user payments, access to a Blue Light Card, alongside flexible working arrangements and a whole range of discounts and offers that comes as standard when working for Wakefield!
Because here we recognise staff are our most valuable resource.
What others have to say about us
“Relationships between key confident leaders are firmly and strongly established operating within a shared culture which is restlessly ambitious for the organisation, the place and for its children and young people.”
Peter Dwyer CBE, DfE Commissioner
“Reduced caseloads are better supporting social workers to focus on core social work practice. All social workers spoke positively about the support and accessibility of managers and senior managers, reporting a significant change in service culture to one now where their views are sought, and they feel valued.”

A great place
In the midst of beautiful Yorkshire, Wakefield has great surroundings, good schools and affordable housing (with rent 2.5x lower than nearby Leeds and a whopping £40k less on average to buy).
We’re also in a prime commuter location. Hop on the M1, A1M or M62 in minutes and access London, Newcastle, and Birmingham by train in around two hours.
Plus, not to brag, but we’re the cultural heart of Yorkshire. With award-winning art and sculpture destinations such as The Hepworth and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a plethora of green spaces, national historical sites, as well as a diverse culinary heritage with our links to rhubarb and liquorice – there’s lots to enjoy.
Does this seem like the type of place you want to work?
We’re looking for only the very best social workers – those with the skills, motivation, and passion to help us move forwards. Join our team. Choose Wakefield.
